What is Trasodone?

Trasodone is a prescription sleep medication that is used for people with severe insomnia and is one that has some dangers of drug interactions. This means the physician should be aware of all medications that are being taken prior to prescribing this drug.

This is an oral medication and is also one that cannot be stopped or changed without monitoring and these other medications it should not be used with are:

  • Triazolam
  • Sibutramine
  • Antidepressants
  • Antihistamines
  • Digoxin
  • St. Johns’ Wort
  • Antigoagulants
  • Blood pressure medications
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Muscle relaxers
  • Narcotic pain relievers
  • Psychiatric medications including: Chlorpromazine and risperidone

This sleep medication should also not be used by people being treated for liver disease or other liver problems.

When trasodone is prescribed it should only be taken when a full eight hours of undisturbed sleep can be had, as this is a drug that should not be used when the person will need to wake or function. It should also never be taken when there is a need to drive or operate any type of machinery.
