Narcolepsy is a serious sleep disorder. Symptoms of narcolepsy are the main signs that indicate that the patient needs medical help. The following are the symptoms of narcolepsy and presence of any one or more symptoms whether mild, moderate or severe can judge this disorder in the patient:
• Daytime Sleepiness: The patients of narcolepsy have the problem of daytime sleepiness. During the day, there might be few sessions when the patient feels sleepy. Normally, each session of sleep lasts for about 30 minutes. And this session can take place at any time like while the patient is talking or watching T.V.
• Cataplexy: Cataplexy occurs in certain parts of the body or in the entire body. Cataplexy refers to muscle weakness. Due to this the patient might not be able to hold things properly or may fall down. Strong emotions and excitement lead to this symptom.
• Sleep Paralysis: This condition lasts for a few seconds or minutes but when it happens, the patient can’t talk or move for sometime. This condition is really dangerous.
• Hallucinations: The patient of narcolepsy may have vivid dreams during their sleepy sessions and they feel that these dreams are real.
This disorder can happen to children as well as adults. The patients of narcolepsy have trouble in concentrating, studying, doing office work etc. It is therefore necessary to take advice of family physician before the situation become worse.
