What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?

Sudden infant death syndrome is when a baby or infant dies suddenly and very unexpected when they are under one years of age. Right now Sudden infant death syndrome also known as SIDS is the number one cause of death with babies. This usually happens when the baby is around 2 months to 4 months old. While there are no known reasons as to why SIDS happens there are ways that you can help to reduce the risk of it from happening.

- Babies always need to be on the back during their sleep.

- Use a really good surface that is firm and do not put the baby on a pillow, quilt or either sheepskin to sleep on.

- Do not let your baby get very hot while they are sleeping.

- Keep toys and other soft objects away from the baby during sleep.

- If the baby must use a pacifier give them a dry one and not a wet pacifier.

Sometimes reducing  the risks of Sudden infant death syndrome does not always mean that it won't happen but it does help in most cases. Doctors still continue to study Sudden infant death syndrome in hopes of understanding more about it and what causes it.
