Can Stress Cause Sleep Disorders?

Stress is one of the major reasons for insomnia. When a person is stressed out, he or she tends to dwell on the cause of the stress. Over thinking, worry and anxiety can interfere with a good nights sleep. When the mind is stressed, the body responds by producing more adrenaline. This hormone increases blood flow and keeps the body alert. As a result, a stressed person may have trouble sleeping.

 Post traumatic stress disorder which occurs after one has been exposed to a traumatic sequence of events, can also result in sleep disorders. People with PTSD suffer from fear, flashbacks, nightmares, and hallucinations which keep them awake at night.

When the body responds to stress, it produces large amounts of cortisol. This chemical interferes with normal sleep patterns and causes sleep disturbances. Prolonged stress can result in problems like panic attacks and depression. These problems are also associated with sleep disorders. The best way to deal with stress related sleep problems is by sorting out problems and thinking about its solutions before going to sleep. In some cases, doctors may prescribe anti depressants or sleeping pills to help the patient sleep better. Maintaining good sleep habits, diet, exercise and abstaining from alcohol and nicotine can help promote good sleep.
