What is Sleep Deprivation?

Sleep deprivation is a sleep disorder in which the patient has very little sleep either for a longer period or for a short span. This disorder is a serious one because, in the long term sleep deprivation can lead to many health ailments. Sleep deprivation can occur for many reasons such as insomnia, stress due to family responsibilities or work, anxiety, menopause, undiagnosed medical condition, or an undiagnosed sleep disorder. Such a sleep restricted state can lead to symptoms like fatigue, feeling sleepy during the day, weight gain, imbalance in hormones, mood swings and lack of concentration etc. This problem can happen to anyone. But it is mostly common among the old age group. Mainly because of physical and hormonal changes after a certain age, a person has chances of having sleep deprivation. It is also common among women during or after menopause.

Having a good night sleep boosts health and immunity. Adequate sleep is required for normal functioning of brain. But the patient of this sleep disorder often faces problems with brain’s ability and thus his decision making power, ability to solve problems etc. get affected. 

Some of the chronic and dangerous effects of sleep deprivation are slurred speech, low self esteem, depression, irritability, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiac disorders etc. It is therefore important to seek medical help immediately.
