What Is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome?

People who’s sleep patterns that have been reversed. Usual adult sleep patterns are go to bed at nigh and get up the next morning. DSPS is quit the opposite. You stay awake all night and sleep thru the day.  People with DSPS do not have the ability to change their sleep patterns.

People with this type of disorder who may try to change their sleep patterns to what we call normal, may eventually not be able to function normally. They cannot eat, sleep, drive or even think straight. This makes everyday living such an effort that they may become clinical depression or other stress-related medical problems.

DSPS patients are unable to fall asleep before 2 a.m., regardless of how early they got up the previous day or how tired they may be. For some, it is impossible to sleep before 6 or 7 a.m.

Some patients are able to function on very little sleep through the week and then they catch up on the weekends by sleeping excessively. However, this also has long term affects.

Many people deny that DSPS even exist. Their family usually calls them just lazy. But this is a real sleep disorder, and most people that have it don’t even realize what it is.
