How common is Sleep Apnea? |
Sleep apnea is mostly common among the 40 percent of snoring people. Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. An apnea is a period of time during which breathing stops or is markedly reduced. To tell simply, an apnea occurs when a person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more. If you stop breathing completely or take less than 25% of a normal breath for a period that lasts 10 seconds or more, this is an apnea. Sleep apnea is more common at middle age and beyond. In women, sleep apnea is more common in post-menopausal women. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. With each apnea event, the brain briefly arouses people with sleep apnea in order for them to resume breathing, but consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality.
